I am Professor of Philosophy and Disability Studies at Georgetown University. For most of 2025 and 2026 I will be a fellow at the SOCRATES Institute at Leibniz Universität Hannover. I am a Fellow of the Hastings Center and a Senior Research Associate at the African Centre for Epistemology and Philosophy of Science (ACEPS). I am the Associate Chair of the American Philosophical Association Committee on the Future of the Profession. I work on philosophy of place and urban theory, social dimensions of science (especially medicine and geography), philosophy of language, social and political philosophy, ethics (including bioethics, sexual ethics, health communication ethics, and science ethics), anti-oppression philosophy (especially gender theory and disability theory), social epistemology, and aesthetics. I’m also a competitive amateur boxer and powerlifter. My pronouns are they/them.

I am the leader of the research project, TERRAINS: Territory, Agency, and Inhabiting Space, funded by a European Research Council Advanced Individual Grant. I will be launching a separate website for the project and also advertising several PhD and Postdoctoral position openings soon!

My new book, Sex Beyond “Yes”: Pleasure and Agency for Everyonecame out from W. W. Norton & Co. in September 2025! The paperback version will be released in October 2026.

A note on citing me, since I get this question a lot: All my papers before 2020 were published under the name “Rebecca Kukla” (or in one early case, “R. Kukla”). If you are citing one of these papers, please put it in the bibliography as originally published. Then in the text, if you mention me, the first mention should be of the form, “Quill Kukla (writing as Rebecca Kukla) makes the following devastatingly brilliant point…”. After the first mention, “Kukla” generally suffices. Also please note that my middle name is R, with no period! Current publications are under Quill R Kukla.
